Natural and Built Infrastructure

→ Beavers as natural infrastructure

Service Mapping Graphic Design

Owen Woertink -  Theo Berry

Challenged to map a system that implements technology into existing natural systems. My partner and I fell into the water management practices of the North American Beaver.

Often considered a nuisance, beavers are a keystone species that play a crucial role in the environment. As opposed to traditional damming methods, beavers provide a natural solution for water storage. When a beaver builds a dam, they slow water, changing the surrounding environment into wetland. Wetlands are ecologically rich with diverse vegetation and local fauna.

Sustainable Water Storage

Effective water management mitigates floods and droughts, with reservoirs and wetlands acting as buffers. While traditional dams store water, they often disrupt ecosystems and come with high costs.

Sustainable alternatives, like beaver-engineered wetlands, offer a natural solution. Beavers slow water flow, creating wetlands that support biodiversity while enhancing water retention.
